Dr. Seuss' The Lorax on our Diapers? What's Going On?

We want to apologize for any confusion or dismay that our use of LORAX characters on our diapers and training pants may have caused. As you may know, The LORAX has been made into a new motion picture that we hope will bring Dr. Seuss' message of sustainability to a new generation, and in conjunction with its premiere we're doing lots of things to spread the book's ideas. (You can learn more about our efforts here).

That said, our diaper images aren't intended to directly market the movie itself.  Our desire is to remind parents and caregivers of the lessons of The Lorax and inspire even more people to discover (or rediscover!) the book. We simply thought it would be a fun way to encourage family reading and environmental awareness while creating a few smiles.

Though many or our customers have seen our diaper art as a celebration of the book that brings a little joy to their diaper changes, others have a different opinion, and in hindsight we can certainly see how intentions and perceptions could diverge. We hope knowing the story behind this temporary change will help assuage your concerns. Please accept our apologies for the misunderstanding and our thanks for caring enough to share your thoughts with us.

To the Insight Team

I think the best would be to leave Lorax on the diapers but have the ones that are image free bcs so many people understand and Love LORAX. So, those people who want image free, they can get it and those people who adore Lorax can always get The LORAX image. It IS very uplifting to see Lorax on the detergent bottles too. This was the reason I am willing to buy more of the SG products bcd of LORAX

The Lorax

I love Lorax character. And, while a lot of parents are upset, there is still advertising and disney out there. So, I am happy to see the character that has a meaning not simply a disney character that doesn't carry any message at all. Love Lorax, brings great massage. And to all those who are so "disappointed" , there is a strong marketing out there and that your children are going to see Lorax is going to make them better people. It is not implanting the horrible idea or like disney going to their parks and other things. It is for environment, and LET THEM market this idea even if they have it. THats hoe huge corps market their cruel idea. But, now you people against A GOOD Idea to be marketed. WHat is wrong with that?

We want our plain diapers back

I first bought the SG diapers a few years ago. Initially, I thought they were kind of boring but I wanted something that was the least chemical. I got used to the brown paper-bag-like color and never bought anything else. Recently, I bought something with Lorax on the box. I was disappointed to find that the diapers were printed with this character, which totally goes against what I thought I was buying! I am looking for non-Lorax SGs, but can't find anything. Please bring back those plain beige diapers because you are the only ones who make them!

love the Lorax! (and overnight diapers)

The Lorax is one of my son's favorite books - he gets upset when he sees a tree has fallen down. He loves that the Lorax is on his daytime AND overnight diapers! I love that you have an overnight diaper now! No more Huggies/Pampers for us, ever!

Do NOT appreciate the Lorax

It seems you are getting lots of feedback on your Lorax advertising on your diapers. I want to make sure to add to your "dislike" pile of letters. As a very happy 7th generation diaper user for 9 yearsI want to let you know I was appalled and shocked to see the Lorax advertising on the diapers. I seriously had to do a double take because I thought I accidentally bought Huggies! Please take the advertising off! Please stop telling us that it is not advertising, it's insulting.

Posted by: ssmith9745

correction

Obviously, I didn't realize my comments would appear at the top of the list. Insert "below" for my comments "above". I plan to write a letter also and I encourage everyone out there who is upset by the lorax to do the same.

Also upset by the Lorax

*scream!* I echo the complaints written above. The lorax advertisement on the diapers makes me furious. One of the main reasons I purchase SG is the lack of advertising. I don’t want my daughter exposed to commercialism while she is in DIAPERS! Additionally, the new design is terrible and it leaks, but that is not my biggest complaint, it’s the Lorax. Please bring back the old design with no advertisement. I agree with “therealdeal” above. It’s insulting to think this just was a happy, la de dah, partnership. I don’t believe it. This partnership just happened one day? Money wasn’t exchanged for the advertisement? I don’t buy it. Please bring back the regular diapers.

Deplorable

I am writing to let you know how disappointed I was to open my diapers and see The Lorax printed on them. I buy SG in part because they 'commercial free'. If I wanted extra dyes or to support a cartoon character, etc., I would buy Huggies at half the price. I don't think just because it is the 'green' Lorax it is anymore acceptable. If anything, it is more deplorable. As for some comments about The Lorax being a book, and therefore 'OK'- I wish. It is a huge movie with a mega advertising scheme and it is for much older kids (certainly not kids in diapers!).
I will be switching to Nature Babycare or Earth's Best until your diapers return to normal.

Re: Why it bothers me, Re: hate the lorax diapers

@thegirlsmama, @kbecks- I'm sure you have read through many of the differing opinions and statements pertaining to this conversation over this page. So I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for getting in touch with us to give us your feedback and thoughts about the recent changes in our diapers. I would also like to let you know that our plain brown Free and Clear diapers are still available, while supplies last, at our web store on alice.com, https://seventhgeneration.alice.com/. I hope this helps!

hate the lorax diapers

one of the main reasons i use 7th generation is because there are no commercial characters on them. if i wanted my children marketed to, i could buy huggies for less $. i was so shocked to see the lorax on the diapers and so disappointed in this company. you advertise free and clear, i interpret that also as free and clear of marketing and commercialism to babies. pls remove the images and don't do this again. i am sure it was a good revenue deal and marketing campaign for you, but at the expense of your customers and it seems you don't know your market at all.

Posted by: thegirlsmama

Why it bothers me

To respond to some commenters: parents concerned about marketing to their children via diapers and other means aren't stupid. Regardless of how good or wholesome the character is, it's still marketing - labelling something with an image intended to encourage (often via emotional manipulation and frequency of views) consumption of another product, in this case a film. I am aware of and love The Lorax, and so I am going to read the book to my daughter when she's old enough, but I do try to avoid her exposure to ads as much as I can while she is still too young to be ad-savvy, and certainly while she is still too young to watch tv and films (the image on the diaper isn't the book character, it's the CGI film version). You know what? It doesn't really bother me if SG wants to promote the film on their packaging, I just don't want it advertised to my susceptible daughter on her diapers. She isn't old enough to be ad-savvy, but as long as I choose SG diapers, she's going to see this image on a very intimate (to her) product multiple times a day, and b/c her mama is using it, her mama is implicitly promoting the film to her, too. I can see that some people love these diapers, so at the very least I would like SG to offer branded and non-branded diapers to their consumers. In the meantime, we'll be using our cloth diapers almost exclusively which, I suppose, is even more Lorax-approved.

Re: I want some!

@lizardofoz- We are so happy to hear that you are excited about our Lorax diapers! Thanks for taking the time to let us know. We don't have a specific end date for when the Lorax prints will come off of the diapers, but they will definitely be around for a few more months. I think that you should be able to find them when you are ready to purchase more in 3 months, no problem.

I want some!

I am a complete Dr. Seuss fanatic (you should see my son's nursery it is Dr. Seuss themed, I love it!) Anyway, I love the idea of Dr. Seuss themed diapers and I really want some. The only thing is that I only use SG's disposables when we are on the go and I have about two packages left, which will last me about three months. So, my question is, how long are these Lorax diapers going to be available?

Re; Annoying again, Re: New Design Leaks

Hi KristannarN and sara16nacho- Thanks for taking the time to tell us that the new diaper design isn't working out for you. We're sorry to hear this! Our new diapers are not designed to leak! In fact, the changes that we made to our diapers were intended to decrease the chances of leaking, while increasing comfort for your little ones. Clearly, this hasn't been your experience, but I think that we can get these to work well for you with some of the sizing tricks that our Customer Service team knows.

The most important thing to know about our new diaper design, is that they are running more true to size than our older design, i.e. bigger than the plain brown diapers. The older design used to run a bit on the small side. So when the new style came out, some parents started experiencing leaking of no fault of their own, likely due to the slight change in size. We are having great success with playing around with sizing, and eliminating leaking issues.

The new design has stretchier tabs, and a more contoured leg. The absorbent core has stayed the same, and absorbs to the same capacity as the previous design. We did introduce Overnight diapers at the same time that we released the new design of everyday diapers. After years of requests, we felt it was time. Their simultaneous release was coincidental, and not for any reason other than to provide increased absorbency at night for growing little ones that tend to require extra protection as they get bigger and drink more. They are available in Stages 4, 5, and 6 for this reason.

I'm so sorry for your frustrations and the messes that I am sure you have had to deal with from leaking diapers! It would be wonderful if you could take the time to contact our Customer Service team so that we can help to right this mess. They are very knowledgeable about our diapers, both past and present. Please give us a call at 1-800-456-1191, 8:30-5:00 EST Monday-Friday, or email us at info@seventhgeneration.com.

Also, while supplies last, both styles of plain brown diapers are currently available on our web store, https://seventhgeneration.alice.com/. The "Free and Clear" plain diapers are available under ‘Baby’, and the "Chlorine Free" diapers from 2 years back are available under ‘Clearance’.

We look forward to hearing from you!

New design leaks!

We have been using 7th Gen with our daughter since she was born, 22 months ago. And we have been loving them until this new design with the Lorax came out. I am perfectly fine with the idea behind the Lorax but the leaking is a real pain. The old design worked fine and I am sad that you changed it. We are about to have twins and I am now seriously considering finding a new diaper for all of them because I don't have time to deal with major leaks. Wish we had the option to buy the old design :(

Posted by: KristannarN

Annoying again

We had the same leak problem with the last redesign...we had to go down a whole size for our daughter. The problem now is leaking for our son. Up twice at night to change him or the whole bed is wet. We never had to use overnights before....was this new redesign so that we HAD to get an extra pack of overnights every time we ordered?!? Pretty bad that the old model circa 2008-2009 was so much more efficient! These are just frustrating.

Different Sizing?

Hello,

We love our 7th Generation diapers. We were about to go up to size 4 when we received the new Lorax diapers which are larger and roomier. However, I just opened my last pack of diapers (I order 4 at a time from Amazon) and it's back to the old size 3 which means it doesn't fit my daughter. I now have 4 packs of diapers that are useless to me. How do I know which size to buy? The size 3 without the Lorax are too small and the size 3 with the Lorax are perfect. There's no indication on the package to know if these are "Lorax" diapers or not. How am I to know what I'm purchasing?

I'm really frustrated. Obviously, I wouldn't have bought 4 packs of size 3 if I had known they were the OLD sizing!

There may not be a line item

There may not be a line item in your contract expressly compensating you for putting a cartoon character on your diapers, but you are clearly in a paid marketing relationship regarding this movie. I don't begrudge you the monetization. You're a business, after all. Blog about it, run their ads, it's all good. But I resent that you put an ad on my kid's behind. I pay more for your products because I believe/d you share my values. Now I'm not so sure.

Re: Why Are There Ads on My Baby's Diapers?/Stay true to your...

Dear Social Media Manager,

You can't be serious when you write "We made the decision to print the Lorax on our diapers in hopes to bring his message to a larger adult audience of parents and caretakers".

This kind of corporate talk is a little insulting for professional parents to listen to. DId you read I am a Marketing Executive myself? Oh, this Lorax partnership just happened by chance? One day SG decided to promote the good Lorax message and print millions of diapers? This is part of a 360 integrated campaign, it is a mega deal with the studios, lawyers are involved, meetings happens, checks are cut. You need contracts and there always is compensation. Why would SG promote a commercial product (that is promoted all across the country right now for millions of $). at no cost? I find it really hard to believe. You sold your "real estate" on the diapers to Hollywood, that's all there is to it.

Bottom line, your customers trusted the SG brand for the values you originally set and shared with us. We responded to them. We were loyal customers. Now, you're proving us that you are moving away and are becoming to become a mass commercial brand.

WE DON"T LIKE IT. IS YOUR MANAGEMENT LISTENING? Probably not, that's why Mr/Mrs Social Media Manager was hired, to manage and care for all the customers feedback.

I ASK ALL THE CUSTOMERS who feel cheated and that SG should not advertise on our children diapers, to WRITE A LETTER or copy their comments on a letter and mail it to their new CEO:

Seventh Generation
John Replogle
60 Lake St
Burlington, VT 05401

Maybe he'll pay attention to the letters piling up on his desk.

Bring back the old design!

We just received a case of Size 4s for our 19 month old - we've been using 7th Gen since the beginning, and last night was our first attempt with the new design. For the first time, he woke up completely wet - and now he has an irritating diaper rash. Please bring back the old design! It it ain't broke, don't fix it!

Re: How is it "spreading a

@msmagenta- Sorry to hear that you are experiencing leaking, as this is not how our diapers are intended to work. The advent of the Lorax on our diapers should not affect the function or the ecological benefits of our diapers. The Lorax is there to remind parents and caretakers of his important message, and it's implications on the future generations that we are caring for. The Lorax is just one of many of our companies initiatives to bring environmental awareness to the public.

If you are experiencing leaking, we would love it if you would get in touch with us so that we can help you figure out what could be the cause of these leaks. Our consumer team has a breadth of knowledge when it comes to diapers, and to all of our products in general. They are always here to chat from 8:30-5:00 Monday-Friday, EST, about any pressing issues, comments, or questions. Please don't hesitate to get in touch via email at info@seventhgeneration.com, or phone at 800-456-1191.

Less diapers? Really?

The last size 5's I bought had 26, the new Lorax size 5's have 23... gee thanks for giving me less for the same price.

I like 7th Gen because it's about quality, not endorsements or sponsors... you just changed all that by selling out. Even if the 'character' views the world the same as the company, to use a 'character' that has an upcoming movie just shows where your priorities lie. Why didn't you use this character years ago? Because it may become popular culture very soon...

Sorry, just really annoyed that my 10 bucks gets me 3 less diapers. I'd rather pay more for the same amount, because now my buying habits have to change... all because of 3 diapers.

How is it "spreading a

How is it "spreading a message of sustainability" if you're using more materials to make the product? And these leak, besides. Just goes to show how corporate sponsorship can wreck a product.

So Suprised!!

I have been using 7th generation diapers for 3+ years now (multiple children). I have always been so surprised with the small changes they've made over the years with stretching and thinness etc. I must say I have never been disappointed. I just opened up the new package and think the Lorax was pretty cute. I support Seventh Generation in sharing such a great character. I would think differently if it was anything else that wasn't sending a good message. Also The new tab design is GREAT! It seems to have more room. Excited i get to stay in size 2 a bit longer. Thanks SG!

Re: Why Are There Ads on My Baby's Diapers?/Stay true to your...

OccupyLorax, therealdeal- Thank you for taking the time to give us your feedback. We would like to address your concerns about our partnership with Universal Studios. Universal Studios has not compensated us, nor have they required us to include The Lorax images on our diapers. We made the decision to print the Lorax on our diapers in hopes to bring his message to a larger adult audience of parents and caretakers. While we are excited for the movie to hit the theaters, our goal is to remind parents of the teachings of the Lorax, be it through the book, the new movie, or the old movie. We apologize for any miscommunication throughout this change. Your feedback is helpful so we can continue to grow with our consumers.

These diapers LEAK!

Why Are There Ads on My Baby's Diapers?

Why has Seventh Generation put advertisements on my baby's diapers? Part of the appeal of SG diapers over other brands was their lack of advertising aimed at young children—no Elmo, Mickey or other characters. Now, with the appearance of the Lorax on diapers for infants and young children, SG has shown that it is no different than the mainstream brands when it comes to foisting commercial brands on kids. No matter what the purported environmental message of the Lorax movie may be, it is the product of a Hollywood studio whose bottom line is its bottom line.

SG claims that "Our diaper images aren't intended to directly market the movie itself…We simply thought it would be a fun way to encourage family reading and environmental awareness while creating a few smiles." I seriously doubt that SG entered this endorsement deal for "fun"; no doubt Universal Studios paid good money for its characters to be featured on premium "green" diapers.

By putting the Lorax on its diapers, SG is not promoting the message of the movie but rather the movie itself—a product. My kids don't see the Lorax on the diapers and want to save trees; they see it and want to see the movie—a movie they are too young to see. Why is a PG movie being advertised to 1 year olds, much less 3 year olds? This s just another form of pollution—mental pollution, promoted by a company that sanctimoniously claims to act in the interests of future generations.

The Lorax must go! Occupy Lorax Diapers!

Stay true to your values (or the one of your customers)

My wife and I work in marketing/branding but have always refused to work on mass-product brands that just pollute our visual environment. We've been lucky to be able to make these choices.

We were annoyed to find the Lorax character on our diapers. We know how business deals work. This was just not brought to us to "add some fun". It's a partnership agreement with fees going to Seventh Generation to expose young consumers to an entertainment product. That's it.

We were even more upset when we saw our friend's daughter (3 yrs old) commenting on Lorax on our baby's diapers. Advertising works!

We buy Seventh Generation products for their integrity. Please get rid of Lorax and any other brands that have nothing to do near our baby's behind.

Thank you for caring,

Re: Has the diaper design changed?

@maureenleddy- Thanks for touching base with us. With the advent of the Lorax appearing on our diapers, there were a couple of other additional changes to the structure of the diaper itself. These changes were intended to be improvements, so we are not happy to hear that you are experiencing leaking! We have added a more contoured leg to allow for more ease of mobility for the baby with a decreased risk of leaking. We have also increased the stretch-ability of the tabs to allow for a more flexible and comfortable fit. As a result of both of these changes, we have found that the way that the diapers fit certain babies, has in some cases, required a different size than they were wearing in the plain version. If the size is not right, leaking is the classic defect we see. Because the absorbent core hasn’t changed in this transition, the diaper should hold the same amount of fluid as before. The good news is, we are having luck with trying a different size for those who have experienced leaking during this transition. In general, our older style of “plain” diapers tended to run a bit on the smaller side. We are finding that our new Lorax printed diapers, are running more true to the suggested size range. That said, if your baby is on the cusp of a particular size, we are recommending that you go with the smaller size. The same can be true for a particularly slender child. If you have any questions or issues with our diapers, or any of our products for that matter, please do not hesitate to contact our trained and experienced Customer Service team. They are skilled at troubleshooting through all sorts of situations. Sometimes I think they might even know a little bit more about diapers then they would like to know! Please, do not hesitate to call us at 1-800-456-1191, or email us at info@seventhgeneration.com.

Has the diaper design changed?

I'm not as upset with the cross marketing as I am with the actual diaper. Has seventh generation changed the diaper design? These lorax diapers feel flimsier and are leaking more than the regular diapers. And I bought a case. Very disappointing

Posted by: Rosie1977

We want the plain ones back too.

I was surprised when I saw the Lorax tags on our laundry detergent but was taken aback when I opened up a new box of diapers and saw the cartoons on the actual diapers. We buy Seventh Generation diapers for a variety of reasons, one of which is that we are trying to raise un-branded children. Whether it be the Lorax or Winnie the Pooh (he is a sweet old fellow too), I don't want any images on my baby's diapers. Get real: images such as these are meant to target children and make them consumers which is not earth friendly. When will this "diaper art" be gone? It won't happen fast enough as far as I am concerned.

Re: Scrapbook as the give away...come on!

@DebraN- We are pleased to report that the Lorax scrapbooks are made from recycled materials. We hope that you are able to get one so that you can start documenting precious memories in it! Thanks for bringing this up and for your feedback.

Scrapbook as the give away...come on!

Unless the scrapbook is made of 100% recyclable materials, it seems a poor choice for the free give away! With your stated efforts to raise awareness of the movie and the message, why not have offered copies of the wonderful and important book (which come printed on recycled paper) or movie tix...

Come on guys!

The Lorax

I can't believe that any of the people against this have ever read The Lorax. Personally, I have no problem with advertising BOOKS for our children and I don't much care how that's done. If your children are unduly influenced by other children having character diapers, that would concern me more. At what age do you start having the "if they jumped off a cliff would you also?" conversations. Some of these comments make it obvious that one does not have to be intelligent in order to have children. Grow up before your children do, please.

Lorax themed diapers

I don't like media either but in this day and age there is no getting around it unless you live completely off the grid and stay there... even then I have my doubts. If anyone has ever seen The Lorax then they will know that this is a positive and pro eco-awareness show to help counteract the media other kids are going to be over exposed to throughout their lives... There is nothing wrong with that. Spend your time attacking a company who is more concerned about your bank account than the well being of our planet and our KIDS' FUTURE. and get over It. I love the idea and I love the lesson that the Lorax teaches kids. Good job 7th gen, I guess you can't please EVERYONE. my goodness!

The Dyes used in our Lorax Diapers

@riottmommy- Thanks for asking about what we are using for the dyes in our newly printed diapers. The ink used for the Lorax design is vegetable-based and typically used in the printing industry for personal hygiene product applications. These are not harmful dyes.

We would also like to let you know that pigment is used to create the signature brown color of our diapers. Without this pigment, our diapers would in fact be translucent. Most people have found the idea of clear diapers to be an unsavory feature for this type of product, so as a result we use a safe brown pigment to set our diapers apart from other bleached diapers on the market. Please check out this link for photographs and an in depth look at why we use pigment in our diapers, http://www.seventhgeneration.com/products/about/role-pigment-diapers.

NO need to apologize - the Lorax on your diapers is DELIGHTFUL!!

We were absolutely delighted to open our Lorax Seventh Generation Diapers and put them on our 17 month old daughter. I have long adored the Lorax book and have recently been delighting in reading it to my 4 1/2 year old daughter who has been asking endless questions about the environment and sustainability as a result. She has never been to a movie theater or seen a movie or tv in our home, but the Lorax Movie might just be her first exposure! That said, I think it's a shame that you feel you have to apologize for the temporary placement of the Lorax on your diapers. The Lorax has one of the most meaningful messages in a children's book and the Lorax himself symbolized concern and care for or environment. In a world where our children are bombarded with characters who bring undesirable messages, it is welcome to see this little guy with such a righteous message on your diapers. I in no way saw it as a promotion of the movie, but rather the embodiment of a message. And, as concerned parents who put or children in Seventh Generation diapers, I am sure we are all equipped to handle any other message or expectation you fear it might bring to your children. I will continue to delight in your Lorax diapers for the short time that they are available - THANK YOU!!

We want our plain diapers back

If we wanted character diapers ... we know where to get them. This isn't about getting us to read a book, this is advertising to the youngest audience. (And advertising to them works ... the little ones will now be disappointed when the little orange man isn't on their diaper anymore, when they hopefully return to plain soon) I wish I hadn't opened the package and I could return them.

Posted by: dolly321

I love it.

My daughter sees other kids' diapers at daycare with all sorts of fun characters on it, and as a result has completely rejected 7thG training pants. I am excited that you're offering a character I can get behind.

Posted by: meganstone00

Stop Overreacting

Whats the big deal about the Lorax on the diapers? I thought they were a very cute addition to the diapers. I was very excited to see a character on them! The dyes don't bother me, and i am sure Seventh Generation made sure the dyes were eco-friendly. I would think the dyes are probably similar to the trees on the training pants as well. I am concerned for the parents that have such an issue with this. I think there are far more concerning things going on this world right now: lets not stress over a character on a diaper! Perhaps we should put on concern on parents that refuse to buy diapers simply because it is associated with a "media" character. Come on now, its on a diaper.

Thank you Seventh Generation for the wonderful diapers!

Posted by: justinelauren

It's not a big deal

I imagine that the dyes they are using will be the same ones that they've been using in their 1, 2, Tree design on their training pants for years.

Posted by: riottmommy

I was concerned mainly with

I was concerned mainly with the dyes used to color these images. I buy these diapers because they are natural and not bleached. What dyes are used in the production of these and how does it change the manufacturing process? And come on, you guys obviously get money from the company promoting the movie, but the diapers aren't any cheaper for us as a result. If you want to apologize, pass the savings down to us.

I don't buy it...

While I appreciate the explanation, as a parent I'm trying to minimize commercial influences on my children in as many ways as I can. This means no Disney, Barbie or other corporate themed toys in the house as well as no cable since the ads targeted at children are so plentiful. I know I won't be able to shield them entirely or forever but I'm doing what I can. I'm trying my best not to raise over-consumers. One of the many things I like about your diapers is that they don't have any of the corporate images on them. So while your explanation makes a bit of sense, I don't find it entirely convincing. This is regular ol' cross promotional marketing, just like Huggies and Pampers do, with the intention of having families purchase Lorax books, toys and movie tickets. I'm disappointed.

I really can't imagine how

I really can't imagine how some would have a problem with this...The Lorax is a wonderful story that is aligned with the ideals of seventh generation. I'm just sad that I don't have anyone in diapers anymore. ;-)
